Although the passing of Samuel was a tragedy his mission was one for the ages. He inspired his parents and all those who knew him. The amazing ability to share this story with the world places this book as a must read. I have no doubt it will touch your soul and change your life.
I read this book in 2 days. It is very uplifting. I lost a grandson at 7 months old and went through many of the same things, although precious little ZJ suffered from a different disease. I laughed, I cried. The story was so parallel to ours. The writing was phenomenal. Took a lot of courage for John and Suzanne to share such deep emotions with strangers. God bless you and your beautiful family. You forever have your own personal angel in Heaven watching and guiding you.

This book is incredibly well written. The honesty in which the author tells this story is incredible. It felt more like he was in the room telling me all about it than it felt like reading a book. This is an incredible family that has come through the other side of hell with an amazing spirit and strength. Once you read this, you will know Samuel's Mission.
FULL DISCLOSURE I know John Henkels. This story, this child, this marriage, this exquisitely detailed account of the despair and triumph...indeed, this journey into joy...is one of the most compelling cases I have ever read for the ultimate victory of lives lived with faith. Our paths initially crossed simply because our spouses worked for the same corporation. Years later, after our own son was diagnosed with cancer, we forged a bond that can perhaps be shared only by parents of children facing life-threatening illnesses. John and I sat on the 'park bench of childhood cancer' together whether we liked it or not (and trust me, we didn't). Beautiful and riveting, Henkels delivers a message that hit me smack in the middle of my heart. I wept. I laughed. I grew.
Samuel's Mission will put things in their proper perspecective. You ride the emotional roller coaster with Samuel's family in this well written book.
I am not someone who "likes" to read books and I read this book in two days. It is an amazing story about a journey that we all hope we never have to take. I look at my life differently after reading it....it is very inspirational and you will truly feel a different love toward your child and spouse after you read it. Thank you john for putting yourself out there so others may learn from you.
